Medical Therapy Q&A

What is medical therapy?

Medical therapy is an evidence-based approach to improving your child’s ability to function in life. It works alongside nursing care to cover the full spectrum of needs that a medically fragile child might have.

What does medical therapy include?

Medical therapy covers three different types of therapy at Little Angels PPEC.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy helps with communication problems, such as difficulty understanding what others are saying or trouble speaking or writing. This includes articulation, voice, and fluency problems.

Speech therapy also covers swallowing disorders; for example, rehab can improve the stages of swallowing. So, while the name might seem like it’s just about spoken word, speech therapy covers every aspect of speech production and language, alongside oral motor function and feeding.

Occupational therapy

Occupational therapy focuses on everyday tasks and your child’s ability to carry them out. These tasks vary by age and steadily increase over time. With occupational therapy, the main goals include helping your child become as independent as possible.

Every child’s course of occupational therapy is unique based on their medical needs and stage in life. Occupational therapy can help encourage strong development, motor skills, improved sensory integration, and overall better quality of life.

Physical therapy

Physical therapy can help children with congenital, developmental, neurological, and acquired disorders to grow stronger and improve their body’s mobility. This type of therapy can help children at any age, even as young as infancy.

Goal-based treatment plans include a range of strengthening and endurance-boosting activities. If adaptive equipment, like a brace or orthotics, can help your child succeed, their therapists may recommend it and then tailor their plan to further success.

What can I do to support my child’s medical therapy at home?

Your support at home is a crucial ingredient in your child’s success. Little Angels PPEC always takes a multidisciplinary, family-centric approach. So, your support plan is unique to your child and their health needs.

The facility works with your family to help you learn exactly how you can best help your child and reinforce what they learn at the facility.
